Like a great pair of sunglasses or the perfect margarita, no summer is complete without a whole lot of ice cream. The regular stuff is, of course, a big vegan no-no. Fortunately, we have so many vegan ice cream options these days, we needn’t sacrifice our sweet tooth just because we’re of the no-dairy sect.
Whether almond-, soy-, coconut- , rice-, or fruit-based, there’s a texture and taste for every ice-creamer lover. This week, I offer up some of my favorites of the coconut-based kind.
So Delicious is the most widely available and most diverse of the coconut-based ice creams I’ve tried. They seem to have made themselves available in most every health and conventional store around. They’ve also conjured up several flavors of the coconut kind, including cherry amaretto, green tea, pomegranate chip, and even cookie dough. Most of the flavors are made with organic ingredients, and all are soy-free for those with that preference. I’ve tried quite a few of So Delicious’ coconut flavors, and I’ve found them to be generally creamy and pretty darn delicious. The consistency rivals “real” ice cream – overall, they’ve created something quite delicious and close to the real thing!
So Delicous is pretty delicious, but I have to say that my favorite of the coconut-based ice cream alternatives is Austin, Texas-based NadaMoo! Certified organic, gluten-free, and vegan, this coconut milk concoction is seriously the most delicious non-ice cream ice cream I’ve ever gotten my hands on. With a fluffy, whipped-cream-like texture and rich flavors like “Gotta Do Chocolate” and “Java Crunch,” this stuff is pure gold. If you’re ever seeking to convert a non-vegan, I’d recommend starting with a pint of this deliciousness; I’d bet my last pint* of it that they’d never know the difference.

Anyone tried the brands I’ve mentioned above? What’s your favorite coconut-based vegan ice cream brand?
*Actually, I’d never, ever bet my last pint of this stuff. It’s that good. Sorry.
