During this smoggy hot week, I’ve been cruising around with the AC blasting listening to a new music find for me, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The Vermont natives formed their band in 2002–where have I been?! Their stylistic range varies greatly, from folky to heavy, jammy to poppy, heavy to soulful. I love their versatility—Potter even collaborates with Kenny Chesney sometimes, so she has a country kick too. I’m not a country girl myself, but it’s cool the different ranges they reach.
Although they often have a Florence and the Machiney sound, they were around before Florence, so let’s just say Florence has a Grace Potter sound sometimes! Although I am a Grace Potter newb—I have only heard one album, The Lion The Beast The Beat—I love love love what I have heard. I particularly dig the folky jam “Parachute Heart.” Speaks to me! I plan on getting their other four albums stat, and you should too! My friend Nick, a huge music maniac, is the one who passed the album on to me. According to him, all their albums are very different, and liking one doesn’t mean you would enjoy them all.
Until then, watch the video for their heavier, more “mainstream” song, “Paris (Ooh La La)”. The video has some nice eye-candy, which never hurts!

I’ll be checking them out at Summerfest next week! I’ll bet their awesome live.
Ah jealous! Have fun!
ZE- Great review. You’re not the first music fan waking up to Grace Potter. Not to mention her band, who could stage a first-class jam-band concert without her! (And they have done it)! You like her album? Then, you gotta see them live. Check out their live video concerts. AT LEAST twice the impact. Promise. You’ll be absolutely mesmerized by them. Who was the last band that could deliver that?! I would say, maybe, Janis Joplin & the Holding Co.. But (God, please forgive me!), this crew puts on a better show, AND GP could sing rings around Janis Joplin.
