Fashion Friday: Summer Concert Style, Part Three

By Callie McBride

In my third and last installment of summer concert style, it’s important to note the recent weather changes. This has had quite an impact on concert-goers’ clothing of choice; by that, I mean people are dressing down. As I ran errands in my lovely air-conditioned car this morning, I was envisioning what I will wear to my final trip to Summerfest, the world’s biggest music festival held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   Images of me in some sort of fringe, floral print, or faux suede as I push my way to the front row of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals came to mind, until I stepped out of my car into the hot, sticky air: 104 degrees. Yeah, that faux suede is not happening.

My planned outfits are out of the question, so I’ve enlisted the help of my most fashionable friend, Katy. She let me follow her around on the 4th of July to adopt some heat-friendly looks for myself.

This is most definitely the easiest summer look to pull off. Anyone can rock a t-shirt and jean shorts! The trick is doing it right. Summertime in the Midwest calls for lots of country pride. Just ask Katy–she was stopped multiple times throughout the fest with compliments on her american flag tee. One word: ‘Murica.

Unless you’re in Austrailia right now for a winter vacation, then temperatures are on the rise for you, too. Katy is smartly demonstrating how to handle the heat: wear as little clothing as possible, without looking trashy! Whether this means swimwear, a beach cover-up, or a cute bralette like the one pictured above, aim for thin, airy clothing.

American Apparel’s Organic Fine Jersey T-Shirts are a great option, as are Onno’s men’s organic cotton tees. As far as hair goes, pull it back, baby. Straightened, curled, or even worn down naturally  will probably result in a sticky, frizzy mess. Don’t compromise style for comfort, though–tie in a cool bandana or a fun headband.

It’s best to surround yourself with the right things during summer: great friends, good music, and crisp libations–in that order, if possible. If you’re going to be somewhere for a long time (think day into evening), a flowy maxi dress like Katy’s would be ideal; shorts or  jeans can get uncomfortable after a while, and tiny dresses can just be a hassle as you try to sit while still staying covered. This adorable Patagonia organic cotton maxi dress will do the trick!

Guys, praying that the heat subsides as the sun goes down, these Alternative Apparel henley tees are perfect for any summer outing. And how cool that the material is a blend of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and naturally occurring rayon!? Stylishly conscious; wonderful combination.

So here’s to you, 100 degree weather: you won’t stop me from grilling out some tempeh-veggie kabobs, dressing fabulously, or attending my favorite summer concerts. In fact, the hotter you are, the more we all get to cool off with some delicious vegan cocktails!
