Music To Make You Cooler: Bombay Bicycle Club

By Andrew Johnson

With their sleepy yet upbeat indie-rock tunes, Bombay Bicycle Club has been warming the hearts of music fans and festival promoters in England since 2006. Although they’ve taken their name from an Indian restaurant chain, they seem to take multiple influences to form their catchy, echo-ladden sound. Through their albums you might think you hear a bit of My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, Silver Sun Pickups, or Rogue Wave backing up Jack Steadman’s unique vocals. For a prime example, look no further than their newest single “How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?” where they seem to invoke the love-child of a softer version of the Strokes circa Room on Fire and My Morning Jacket circa Evil Urges.

All possible influences acknowledged, the band has undeniable talent. Enough to win an opening spot at England’s V Festival back in 2006 when they were still in school. Since then, they’ve released two full length EPs and an acoustic album using both their own label Mmm…Records and on Def Jam’s Island Records. In support of their July release, A Different Kind of Fix, the lads are broadening their usual UK tour to include 14 cities in America, as well as stops in Canada, Australia, and Turkey. Visit their website to see if they’ll be coming to your town and to purchase some new tunes.
