Weekend Beauty 101: DIY Banana Sugar Body Scrub

By: Elyssa Schwartz

Okay, so I have to stop doing this to myself! I keep on making these at-home beauty treatments that are not only good for the skin but are tasty enough to eat! Do I scarf it down? Do I rub it all over myself? I’m truly torn. However, I made a commitment. I think it’s safe to say that next week will be a review.

This week, I tested out yet another scrub – full body treatment this time. The timing couldn’t be any more perfect for the browning banana in my kitchen; easier for mashing.

Before I get into all the sticky details (and I do mean sticky) there are a few things to know about this yellow-jacketed fruit.

Bananas are good for you for the obvious reasons:  vitamin C, rich in antioxidants and potassium blah, blah etc. Not to mention bananas can potentially prevent cellulite. I mean, who wouldn’t want that? In terms of skincare, the creamy pulp of a banana is luscious and soothing which allows it to work well when combined with other ingredients. Bananas also nourish, moisturize and can be used for gentle exfoliation and is known to tighten up lose skin.

This simple homemade banana sugar body scrub does just that! When combined with sugar, a gentle aromatic exfoliating scrub forms.

Materials: ripe banana, granulated sugar, pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil

  1. Gather your materials!
  2. Peel banana and put in bowl.
  3. Add 3 tbsp sugar.
  4. Add ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract (or your essential oil of choice).
  5. Mash ingredients together with a fork. Be careful not to over mix otherwise it will become too watery.
  6. The mixture should become a chunky paste.
  7. Before turning on the water, give yourself a nice rubdown with your homemade scrub. Gently massage scrub all over your body. Rinse off with warm water.

The best part about making your own beauty products is that they are in the most natural form. No chemicals, no dyes and no chance of animal testing. That’s what I’m here for after all, to do the testing for you!

I really enjoyed making this scrub, especially because it was so easy and smelled great! The sugar/banana combo felt amazing on my skin as it exfoliated. I don’t really know if my skin feels any different, but I do feel this scrub is a great alternative than anything store bought. Put it this way, my skin is not – not soft; know what I’m sayin’? Test it out, see if you like it! Just make sure to avoid bugs by cleaning out the leftover chunks of banana from the tub!

What would you like to see me test out? Seriously, I’ll try anything once. Let me know in a comment!
