Pop Culture: Vegans Dominate Oscar Nominations

It’s that time of year again! Oscar nominations are out, and vegan movie lovers are thrilled. Four vegan actors have been nominated for Oscars this year! Let’s run through the list…

Anne Hathaway ditched animal products in 2012 and is reaping the benefits, both on and off screen, in 2013. She is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables. Besides being nominated, she is also many critics’ favorite for the category. I don’t know if her vegan diet facilitated that amazing singing voice, but I do know that I was blown away by her performance.

And, believe it or not, all that amazing singing? It was performed and recorded live.

(Are you crying? I’m crying.)

Another vegan- friendly member of the Les Mis cast, a little known actor by the name of Hugh Jackman, is also receiving a nod from the gold man. Jackman is nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jean Valjean.

Jackman is not the only vegan in this category, as Joaquin Phoenix is also vying for the award. He was nominated for his role as  Freddie Quell, a troubled man seeking guidance in The Master.

However, Les Mis isn’t the only movie causing a stir this season. Zero Dark Thirty, a thriller about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, has set all of Hollywood abuzz. In proper tribute, Jessica Chastain, a vegan, received a Best Actress nomination for her role as Maya, the CIA agent who devised and led the mission.

So, who’s ready for a vegan sweep of the Oscars? I know I am. Maybe this year an acceptance speech will begin, “I’d like to thank all the fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds that made all of this possible…”
