Product Review: Tofu Xpress Tofu Press

I originally reviewed this kitchen toy on SexyTofu.com back in December as part of a gift guide, but I want to share it with you here, now. Why? Because kitchen toys are fun to buy—for yourself or for others—year round. Also, Valentine’s day is coming up, and while V Day and I have a murky relationship, I know many of you are looking for thoughtful, non-cliché gifts for your partners. Or yourself! Buy yourself a gift, why don’t you? Anyway, enjoy.

Harry, Ron and Hermione are excellent tofu pressers.

When I first heard about the Tofu Xpress I was torn. Is it the most amazing invention ever? Or will it just clutter up my kitchen? I was feeling pretty good about my current tofu pressing method….

I emailed the company and requested a sample to possibly review. I was still skeptical when I pulled it out of the box- it sort of reminded me of a less sturdy Pyrex dish with a spring lid.

BUT HOLY CRAP THE TOFU. The first thing I did with it was press tofu to make a scramble. Now let me tell you, this is great for the lazy because despite knowing that tofu tastes 90 percent better after a good pressing, I only do it if I have someone else to impress with my meal. How sad, right? I don’t feel like lugging out all my HP books and making a big sopping mess just for myself.

However, I am now a sworn Tofu Xpresser. You see, my HP books often smash my tofu so that after pressing it is very ugly and deformed–sort of like how in the beginning of the HP film series Voldemort is only mildly unappetizing but at the end he somehow lost a nose. But the Tofu Xpress kept my tofu in its natural square shape while removing all the liquid and making it chewy and delicious. I used it again two days later, and not only did I press my tofu, but I then MARINATED IT right in the dish, and then pressed it again. It was so easy and now I am forever a Tofu Xpress devotee. Invest in this tofu press, or be super lovely and give it as a gift to your favorite tofu hound. Maybe a Valentine’s day gift? Hmmm?

loved my tofu xpress but recently when putting it away I tagged the edge my the cabinet with the ‘ear’ that sticks up. Snap. That was the end of my $40 press. Nice gadget while it lasted but it’s fragility and with so many different size tofu bricks on the market now that are either too tall or too long to fit into the xpress, I’ve gone back to the old method :-(

I use the EZ TOFU PRESS, it presses faster and has less parts to break like Dave mentioned above. Works great!
