The story of an Australian kitten that nearly died after being fed a strict vegan diet has people all over the world in a vegan-hating uproar, calling vegans “malicious, selfish, and cruel”.
A kitten that had been consuming an all vegan diet was brought into Lord Smith Animal Hospital in Australia after it become extremely weak and almost non-responsive. The vegan owners of the kitten had been feeding it a steady diet of potatoes, rice milk, and pasta, which to me doesn’t sound like a suitable diet for any sort of creature.
The veterinarian treated the kitten with a heat pad, fluid drip, and plenty of meat. It spent three days at Lord Smith before being sent home with its owners, who were told to start feeding the cat meat.
Dr. Leanne Pinfold, who treated the kitten, told the Herald Sun, “”You can’t force your ideology on the cat,” Pinfold told the Herald Sun. “Carnivores will seek out meat and your cat is possibly more likely to go hunting and kill local native fauna if you deprive it of meat.”
Everyone has an opinion and we’re hearing quite a bit from individuals condemning veganism and writing off its followers as people that should “never own pets”. Here’s what I think. Maybe the lack of meat wasn’t the problem? Maybe the kitten was just not receiving the protein and nutrients it needed because the owners fed it such a limited diet? But I’m still not sure what the answer is here.
Since you’re obviously browsing through iEatGrass.com, you’re probably vegan, vegetarian, or at the least, you don’t condemn the lifestyle. So, I’d like to hear from you! How do you feel about feeding pets a vegan diet? Can it work if done properly or is it always wrong?
