Everyone knows that if you want to stay “on trend” you need to look at what celebrities are wearing. Celebrities are often the first to see and receive fashion from designers so it makes sense that the rest of us mere humans would want to wear what they wear. However, as much as we lust after the latest Armani dress hanging off of one starlet or another at one of the million awards shows, there’s a lot of things we wouldn’t wear. Case in point: the ever changing wardrobes of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj.
Props to both of these strong women for wearing what they want when they want, but the rest of us probably couldn’t pull it off. Personally, I’ll stick to my Modcloth and H&M attire, but I can at least appreciate their stylishness from afar. Still, even their style is questionable at times, so these divas will have to duke it out over who can pull off the crazier look.
Kermit vs. Build a Bear
I love the green guy as much as anyone else, but I don’t think I’d be daring enough to make a coat out of him. Is Lady Gaga making some sort of animal rights statement with her outerwear? Ah, who knows? She probably just likes green.
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Like Gaga, Nicki Minaj likes to cover herself in her animal friends. However, she doesn’t limit herself to just one animal or one color. She struts out in a rainbow stuffed animal dress and certainly makes a statement. As long as I don’t think about the bodies of the teddy bears on the bottom, I do like all the pretty colors.

Jungle Fever vs. The Mouseketeer
If I learned anything from watching all of the Cheetah Girls movies, it’s that every outfit’s a little bit better with some stylish spots. However, I draw the line at my hair. Nicki is known for her crazy hairstyles, but this one is definitely wild. As an animal lover, I can get into her cheetah print jumpsuit, I just don’t know how I would get out of it.
Lady Gaga also makes an interesting print choice with her bright yellow get-up covered with Mickeys featured in her music video for “Paparazi.” The sunglasses are an homage to the “mouse who started it all” as well. If you read my vegan guide to Disney World, you know I’m a big fan of the mouse. Still, I’m hesitant to get myself a pair of Mickey shaped earrings, much less an entire suit decorated with his likeness. While I’m searching for the perfect souvenir, at least I can live vicariously through Miss Gaga.

Puffy Padded Shoulders vs. Hula Hoop Hips
Lady Gaga gives new life to the shoulder pad fad of the 80’s and 90’s by going above and beyond…literally. Not only is this leotard bright green and sequined, but the padded shoulders take it to new heights of fashion. I’m personally not a fan of shoulder pads of any height, but I can appreciate a resurrected trend.
Like Gaga, Minaj likes breathing new life into old trends. However, she goes back a century and a half, reminding us of the hoop skirts of Gone With the Wind. The skirt also accentuates her bootylicious figure, showing it’s okay to love your curves. In a world in stick thin models, it’s important for female celebrities to embrace and showcase their womanly figures.
Point to Minaj.
Gaga rocked the boat with her “Judas” song, but she really made waves with the outfits she wore in the music video. Not everyone agrees with her religious views, but we can all agree that she’s going where no pop star has gone before. If nothing else, she’s the sexiest nun we’ve ever seen. I can’t see myself donning a shiny habit anytime soon, but I recognize Gaga’s duality as an artist and a woman. By choosing not to show any skin, she makes as much of a statement as when she wears almost nothing.
Many people mistook Minaj for Gaga in this red dress and cape get-up at the Grammy awards. I’m not sure exactly what kind of religious statement she’s trying to make, but it’s probably safe to say that Gaga has already made it on the red carpet and in her music videos.
