5 Resources For New Vegan Mommies and Dads!

Usually we jump for joy and pop champagne like it’s a NASA discovery when we see the word “vegan” in breaking news’ headlines. Sadly, earlier this week there was an unfortunate turn of events when a young vegan mother was arrested for failing to bring her infant to the hospital. A clip from the Daily News reads:

CASSELBERRY, Fla. – A Casselberry mother was arrested on allegations of refusing to take her newborn, diagnosed by a doctor as dehydrated, to a hospital because of her staunch vegan stance.

3. The Dangers of Soy-Based Infant Formulas + Alternative

Even though soy formula is discouraged as a first-choice artificial baby milk, in some babies it is a necessary alternative to cow’s milk-based formulas. According to Dr. William Sears, many of the objections to soy formula are perhaps more theoretical than practical (since studies have shown that healthy term babies grow just as well on soy as they do on cow’s-milk-based formulas). It’s what we do not know about soy that concerns us. We don’t have that much experience with soy, so be cautious.

William Sears, MD and Martha Sears, RN, have been sought advice by millions through 40+ pediatric books, articles in parenting magazines, and appearances on more than 100 television programs such as 20/20, Donahue, Good Morning America, Oprah, CBS This Morning, CNN, NBC’s Today Show and Dateline.

In countless articles and studies, it has been suggested (as there is no concrete evidence) that relying solely on soy-based formulas can be severely detrimental to an infant’s health.

Written by Bonzai Aphrodite blogger Sayward Rebhal, this book contains nutritional information, meal planning, and advice on how to handle questions from skeptics and critics alike. A great read for prego vegans or those trying to conceive.
