My Meatless Life: Open Letter to Don Lemon


First of all love the suits, on Friday you told me (and all black men and boys) former and current, hard headed teenager who grew up or are growing up in the gang era that I should pull my pants up. So did/does my mom but this is the style and I’m cool. That’s how I felt as a kid that’s how every teenage kids thinks – I still remember! You go on to lay out some other “rules” for survival. Now prior to coming out to the world in 2011 Don, I’m sure there any points in your life when you were told to “act straight around certain people am I right? In that hypothetical space did someone ever tell you it was for your own safety? Maybe they had some “rules” you were given were like- don’t be public with your lover, no limp wrist, don’t ware pastels etc. am I right? The pressure to be a man is high on hetro boys so I can imagine how you must have felt I mean you yourself said the closet is disgusting and dishonest. Yet, you are trying to build a Florida size closet for every young impoverished or affluent black and brown boy to go into. Only to reemerge with a false pretenses to cover up what we decide is bad. Brotha Lemon as you write yes it’s ok to be a “sissy” then my brotha it’s ok to be a young black boy.
